Two Voice Poem -- The Reflection

Voice 1:  Karara
Both
Voice 2:  Eric  #
Maha, why don’t you treat me well?
You aren’t a very good
Mother!
Can you please go away?
“From the day you came out as a girl
and not a boy, you have been a burden.”
(page 85)  Just because I’m a girl, doesn’t
 mean I’m worthless!
Why do you always think it’s me, just
because I’m a boy!  April broke that plate!
“Karara, weave the wah-pu into baskets,
crush up the ay-ah-e-yah一the men need
 more for fishing tomorrow一and watch
your sister.  I’m taking Luka to the forest.”
(page 38) Maha throws words and chores
and tasks galore at me, like I was a worthless slave.
“Get your dress shirt, your vest, your
dress pants, your church shoes, your
black pants, a belt.”  I have to
get all that fancy clothes that I hate,
and Heather and April just slip on a
dress that they would wear every
second of their whole lives anyway.
Time is frozen for me, trapped in
a huge loop of chores and tasks.
An endless pause that will never
stop until Luka passes his test.
I climb out of the back seat
to get out and my mom yells “Hey!!
Let your sisters out first!”, like the world
 would implode if I didn’t
Why does it matter that I am a
girl?
boy?
That doesn’t mean I’m any less
important.
free.
Because you know what?
We deserve equality because we are humans all the same.

In writing the Two Voice Poem, I had to make a poem that compares my life to Karara's life (from Bringing the Boy Home.  The learning targets I tried to aim for were:
  • I can write a poem that compares two perspectives
  • I can use specific and relevant evidence from the text in my writing
  • I can use figurative language and descriptions in my writing to create vivid pictures in my readers mind
I think that I met the first learning target, because I think I explained the differences between myself and Karara decently.I don't think I got the 3rd reading target, because a) No one has read it yet so I can't know what picture it paints, and b) I am not so great at writing poems.  Well, I was.  I used to not be able to do figurative language so well.  My similes and metaphors made no sense whatsoever.  But, after making this poem, I improved a bit in writing poems.I partly achieved the third learning target because I only used one quote, and only explained what Karara's life is like, not why.

I have only made a few poems before this in 5th or 4th grade.  I think That I might write some again on a day with no school, maybe a random day on vacation to show my parents/grandparents or something.

I think I did well on my use of figurative language in this poem.  I think my best use of figurative language is "Time is frozen for me, trapped in a huge loop of chores and tasks.  An endless pause that will never stop until Luka passes his test.", because that's three metaphors in 2 sentences, and they all make sense. I also think that I did good at comparing Karara and I. I used 2 quotes from the book, which made there be evidence, supporting my comparison.

Esportes: 10 phrases - The Reflection dun dun dun

  1. Ele e um goalkeeper excelente para futebol.
  2. Ela e muito alto, entao joga basquete muito bem
  3. Eu vou para o driving range todos os Sabados para jogar golfe.
  4. Eles gostam de jogar beisbol.
  5. Meu time ganhou o torneio do futebol!
  6. Eu odeio de jogar futebol.
  7. Ela gosta muito de jogar futebol.
  8. Voce quer jogar basquete?
  9. Eu quero jogar basquete.
  10. Eu estou perto do o gol do futebol.........    GOL!!!!

Before I begin here, Dona Rebello said I do this in the language I speak at home, so that's why this is in English, not Portuguese.

For this Portuguese exercise, I had to write 10 sentences about sports.  I think I made basic sentances, but one was good, #2.  They weren't so basic like 'I hate soccer' or 'I play tennis'.  #2 had two parts, and had a reason why someone was good at something.  She is tall, so she plays basketball well.

I learned things this quarter in PFL B.  A) more verbs in Portuguese, B) how to write dialogues, and C)  TURN IN YOUR WORK!!!!!!  I think I can learn more by turning in work more often, working harder in class, and taking this class seriously.  I will do these things next quarter!!!

Final Literature discussiion reflection/analysis

Reflection

I think today in literature circle (the last one), we got off topic.  A lot.  Some people got me distracted by laughing on question 3, "What animal are you?".  I said I was a frog, and Clara said "So a princess will come and kiss you and you'll turn into a prince?".  Yeah, Clara, very funny.  Anyway,  we also rambled off a bit on Harry Potter (my fault, sorry).  Peter and I also talked over each other (again), which was bad.  The discussion was very fueled though, as Camila and I argued about some things, like if you would have Tirio on your soccer team for question 4, "Imagine this: you are the captain of a soccer team; would you pick the handicapped Tirio to be on your team?  What if it was a championship game?  I said yes and she said no.

Analysis

For question 3, I think that I am like a frog.  Why?  Well, frogs hop a lot. and some really fast.  My attitude can change randomly like a frog hops.  Also, I really snatch information up, like a frog snatches flies or insects with it's tongue.  And again with the tongue, I hear very far away things, like a frog can catch a far away bug.  Again with question 3, I think Karara is more like a jaguar.  Well, she is a shaman, and dead shamans take the form of a jaguar.  But also she is very determined, like a jaguar, to show that girls aren't so unimportant and they are actually equally important as boys.  Not that jaguars fight for equal rights or anything.

Literature Circle Discussion Reflection and Analysis

Reflection

Hello!  In Literature Circles today, we had to something else.  We had to film ourselves!  Why?  Well, because my teacher said that she wanted to see how we discuss in the whole time, and she wanted us to see how we discuss in the third person.  I could have done a little better at opening the book to look for evidence.  Okay, a LOT better.  I don't think I really opened at all.  I did horrible at that.  But Camila did excelent at opening the book to look for evidence..  I couldn't see Clara that well, but I think she opened the book.  Peter added on to people's claims (and tried to disprove mine).

Analysis

I think we kinda messed up with the filming a little, Peter was half cut off of the screen.  We had a pretty good discussion.  A lot of claims, and a lot of argueing.  Arguing is good, because if you don't argue in a discussion, you won't learn anything about supporting your thinking.  And who knows?  Maybe you're wrong and just needed the right evidence to prove that you are wrong.

Literature Circle Discussion 6 Reflection and Analysis

Reflection

I think that in our literature circle discussion we did a bad job at staying on topic.  We started talking about the memory space on Camila's phone, and some other things I can't remember.  We did a good job at talking about different culture's way of doing a funeral, and the different Takunami rituals (passing the soche seche tente, funerals, marriage).  I think that we did a good job at picturing if something that happened to the characters.  For example, we know that Luka is getting married at 13.  We said that it would be weird if I was told that I was getting married the next day when i was THIRTEEN.  I mean reall, how scary and weird would that be!

Analysis

I think that it was a little different when Mr. Dunlop came and started talking to us.  He sat down to be part of the discussion, and put his foot in the way of the camera.  That was pretty funny.  That was true, but a little off topic.  Kind of like my discussion.  I really think that my group could do a lot better at staying on topic.
